EXPRESS SCRIBE
The latest version is 5.00, introduced around the beginning of December 2009, with video capability for the first time. It is a little unclear which video file types the program will play, but I tried a .wmv which wouldn’t play.
One customer has had a problem with 5.00 in which files played at the expected speed when using F-keys, but accelerated when the foot pedal was plugged in. This did not happen on our system, but the workaround was to uninstall 5.00 and re-install an older version. We do have various older versions if you ever need one.
File types which can be played with Express Scribe:
Express Scribe for Windows can be used to load most common audio file formats. These include wav, mp3, dct (encrypted dictation), ra and rm (RealAudio), sri (VoiceIt), dss (Olympus, Lanier and Grundig), au, aif, msv, dvf, mp2, vox, compressed wav (including PCM, uLaw, ALaw, ADPCM, CELP, SBC, Windows Media, DSP TrueSpeech, GSM 6.10), Philips Digital Recorder format, Sanyo Digital Recorder format and more. DSP TrueSpeech is not currently supported on Vista.
Express Scribe for Mac OS X can be used to load wav, mp3, aiff and dct file formats.
If you are running a Mac (excellent) and need to convert Windows file formats to, say, mp3 for use in Express Scribe, try using Switch from NCH. It’s an easy and free file converter. If you have Flip4Mac installed on your Mac to play .wma files in QuickTime, you will (as of 17.12.09) need to install an older version otherwise Switch will crash. Go to telestream.net and download version 2.2.3.7 which will allow Switch to work fine. (Thanks and commiserations to Vicki for being the guinea pig on this.)
